Graphitization is a process in which amorphous carbon is heated for a long time to rearrange its atomic structure and achieve an orderly transformation from a random layer structure to a graphite crystal structure. During graphitization, carbon atoms rearrange to fill atomic gaps and improve the atomic arrangement.
In the presence of oxidizing gas, the rearrangement of atoms in the amorphous carbon is favored. This breaks the bonds in the most disordered regions of the amorphous carbon. This includes where carbon-carbon bonds can interconnect between layered planes or other interlocking regions of the amorphous structure.
Uses of graphite graphitization:
1. Improve thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of graphite materials
2. Improve thermal stability, thermal shock resistance, and chemical stability of graphite materials
3. Improve the lubricity and wear resistance of graphite materials
4. Remove impurities in graphite materials and improve the purity
5. Reduce the hardness of graphite materials for processing

3. Effect of pressure and plastic deformation
4. The role of additives
5. Effects of radiation exposure
